Jalapeño Ketchup Flavored Chips from Chipsy
Delicious Egyptian Snacks
Ketchup flavored potato chips have gained popularity around the world, but in 2019 Chipsy took it to the next level by adding Jalapeño to the mix! In a campaign celebrating top players in the UEFA’s Champions League, Messi is the face of Chipsy’s Jalapeño Ketchup flavored chips. I don’t think this flavor lives up to Messi’s all star status, but these chips are worth trying.
These chips definitely lead with a full-on ketchup flavor. If you’ve never had a ketchup chip before, it’s a weird experience. Your taste buds think it should be ketchup, but instead you are crunching on a potato chip. You also get a vinegary, slightly sweet taste that I wasn’t expecting. The jalapeño comes through as a middle of the mouth spice. I didn’t find these chips very spicy, but I would give a medium heat rating for the average American audience. After eating a few they leave a nice sweet/vinegary/spice flavor around your lips. We did notice that the flavor and spice of each chip was weirdly inconsistent.
Curious how Chipsy gets that ketchup flavor into their chips? Well, don't expect any hints from the ingredient list. According to the package they contain: fresh potatoes, vegetable oil & Jalapeño Ketchup flavor. No secrets being given away there!
The Egyptian brand Chipsy was acquired by PepsiCo in the early 2000s. Chips are still sold locally under the Chipsy name, but you’ll notice the logo matches that of Lays (and Walkers in the UK). I highly recommend the Kebab flavored chips, another delicious local specialty in Egypt.
