Albeni Candy Bar - Snack Review
Fun Supermarket Snacks from Turkey
You can’t go wrong with a mix of chocolate, biscuit and caramel! Albeni is a classic-style candy bar made by the Turkish company Ülker. There are multiple snacks produced under the ‘Albeni’ brand, but this is the classic bar. Coated in a layer of milk chocolate, Albeni is filled with a thin caramel layer and biscuit inside. The chocolate almost tasted a bit malty, but I think it is just lower-quality chocolate that doesn’t have a rich flavor. The caramel wraps around the sides and top of the biscuit. Not too sticky (which is nice), and you do taste the sweetness. The biscuit filling was softer than I was expecting, very light and airy. It almost disintegrates in your mouth as you are chewing. Overall, the Albeni candy bar was worth trying because I haven’t eaten many Turkish packaged snacks before, but I wouldn’t purchase another one for myself.
The ingredient list on the Albeni bar actually breaks out the content percentages of the primary sections of the snack. That is pretty cool!
The Albeni bar is 31% chocolate, 26% caramel & 28% biscuit.
I purchased this snack near my home in Queens, NY at a local shop called Lemon Farm for $1.00. I have since these sold on the web for a much higher, around $3 to $5.
Albeni is like a Turkish Version of Twix
Growing up in the U.S., Albeni is similar to a Twix with small variations. (Disclaimer: Twix is one of my all-time favorite candy bars, so my review is definitely biased.) The chocolate used in Albeni is not as good as the Twix, but I enjoy that the caramel is less prominent. The Twix’s biscuit is much crunchier and more flavorful, whereas I don’t think the biscuit in Albeni brings much to the equation.
Brief History of Ülker
This well-known Turkish confection and snack company was established in 1944, over 75 years ago! Brothers Sabri & Asim Ülker began making treats in a small bakery in Istanbul, and then expanded across Turkey and now the world! Ülker started out making biscuits, and in the 1970s began producing chocolate. Ülker’s marketing plan was to make chocolate that was affordable and accessible, not for a luxury audience. Today, Ülker is owned by Yildiz Holding company, the Turkish powerhouse who also owns part of Godiva.
