Welcome to the Visitor's Guide to Canary Wharf!
Canary Wharf is London’s second largest business district, a hub for the multinational finance industry. Citibank, Credit Suisse, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, China Construction Bank, Barclays – you name it! For the heavy hitters of finance and banking, Canary Wharf is a well-known destination. For the average tourist to London, Canary Wharf may not make it onto the ‘must-see’ list. But, if you’re traveling to London for business don’t be surprised to call Canary Wharf home for a few days!
Â
Escape the Office Series
As the first post in my ‘Escape the Office’ series, I created this guide to show my fellow business travelers that Canary Wharf is much more than just skyscrapers and conference rooms. Whether you have a few hours or a few days, ditch the office coffee, grab a colleague and escape the office! Canary Wharf is loaded with fantastic restaurants and bars, and don’t miss the history, culture and even nature that is just outside your office walls! Enjoy this visitor’s guide to Canary Wharf!Â

Navigating Canary Wharf
To first-time visitors Canary Wharf feels like a maze of skyscrapers connected to an even more confusing labyrinth of underground shopping centers bisected by waterways and public transportation. To help orient yourself remember that there are a few main “Places” including Jubilee Place, Cabot Place, Canada Place, etc.. So, pay attention closely when given directions! Good news! Pretty much all of the shopping centers are connected below ground, and you can access many office buildings as well without even having to go outside! (Great for London’s wet, cold weather winter weather!)
Canary Wharf is also well connected to public transportation. See below for some tips for first-time metro users in London. As a visual, check out Canary Wharf Group’s Guide providing a comprehensive map and directory of the retail locations and offices in Canary Wharf. Or, I have included a map below highlighting the references in this post!Â
Download Citymapper, my favorite app for navigating London! For public transit gurus, Citymapper even tells you which subway car to ride in to maximize commute efficiency.
Tips for Taking the London Underground & DLR
Canary Wharf is well connected to London’s public transit. The closest stops are Canary Wharf on the Underground Jubilee Line and multiple stops on the DLR: West India Quay, Canary Wharf, Heron Quays & South Quay Plaza. Here are some useful tips for first-time business travelers to London.Â
– Buy an Oyster Card when you first arrive in London. You can use this refillable transit card for the buses, trains, metros and even ferries! You can easily transfer between systems using the same fare card.Â
– Download the Oyster Card app. With the app you can refill your Oyster card anywhere, anytime. Also, if your job requires receipts, it is easier to track spending on the app.Â
– Don’t forget to tap in & out! London’s public transit system has a tiered faring system by zones traveled. Some of the stations, especially on the DLR are based on the honor system. Travelers are able to physically enter without tapping their Oyster Card, but if you’re caught a fine will await you! Also, don’t forget to tap your Oyster card again when you are leaving! Otherwise, you’ll just be charged the maximum amount for the day.Â
– Underground service differs at night and on weekends. Good news! The Jubilee Line runs 24 hours on Fridays & Saturdays! If you’re planning a late night out or adventuring on a weekend, read more here.Â
– Interested in staying outside of Canary Wharf? Look for hotels along the Jubilee Line for the easiest commute into the office! There are plenty of great hotel options in the Waterloo or Westminster area if you want to be closer to London’s central attractions. If business is bringing you to London for the first time, consider spending a few extra days to visit some of the city’s top sites!Â
Wondering what is the 'DLR'?
The Docklands Light Railway, or DLR, was developed in the 1980s in an effort to improve connectivity between Canary Wharf and the rest of the city. Construction of the DLR coincided with London’s larger initiative of revamping developing and jump-starting industry in the former docklands area. The great news for business travelers is that you can easily make it from your office to central London in 20 minutes! If you’re flying into London’s City Airport you can take the DLR right to Canary Wharf!Â
Â
Don't Forget to Look Out the Window!
Before you even make it out of the office, don’t forget to look out the window! Many of the office buildings in Canary Wharf offer fantastic views of the area and beyond. Don’t be embarrassed to geek out and take some photos from above! No matter how many times I visit, the view from the office windows never gets old!Â
Coffee Break!
Sure we’re just getting started, but let’s take a coffee break!Â
Going out for coffee is one of the easiest ways to ‘Escape the Office’ when on business travel. Sure your office has free coffee, but why not treat yourself and get a little fresh air at the same time!? First off, if you’re fighting jet lag, no further justification needed. Second, even if you’re trying to maximize every minute of your time with local colleagues, invite other folks along. A visitor from out of town is the perfect excuse to splurge on an afternoon latte!
There are plenty of small cafes and brands with local roots within just a 10-minute walk from your office or hotel. Below are my top recommendations coffee when visiting Canary Wharf!Â
Top Coffee Recommendations for Visiting Canary Wharf
Notes Coffee Roasters
Notes is a London-based socially responsible coffee company with 3 locations in Canary Wharf. In just over a decade, Notes grew from a small specialty coffee cart to 9 shops and even their own roastery in East London! Notes strikes the perfect balance of marrying local with a global. They feature single origin coffees, and beans are sourced directly from smaller farmers and cooperatives around the world.
Locations in Canary Wharf:Â
Canada Walk – Unit 6 Canada Walk, 20 Canada Square E14 5NN (Closed Sat., Sun. & evenings)
Crossrail – Unit CR24 Crossrail Place, London E14 5AR
Jubilee – Canary Wharf Station, London E14 4JB
Taking the metro or DLR to Canary Wharf station? You'll see a Notes location located conveniently right before the escalators exiting the station. Service is pretty quick, but the queue can be intimidating on a weekday morning at rush hour! Definitely budget in 5 to 10 minutes or so to avoid getting stressed.
History of Notes
For Notes’ co-owner Fabio Ferreira, the coffee industry runs in his genes. Ferreira’s grandparents even owned a coffee farm in Sao Paulo State, Brazil until 1969, when running it was no longer financially viable. But, initially Ferreira was not a coffee drinker until he discovered the beauty of specialty coffee while traveling in the early 2000s. (Read the full story here.) Over the next 20 years Notes was born, and today it is a key player in providing the caffeine fix needed by those coming to work in Canary Wharf!Â
Neama Cafe
Part coffeeshop, part Italian bakery and restaurant, Neama Cafe serves a delicious cappuccino! Located just off Marsh Wall St. to the south of Canary Wharf, Neama Cafe is super close to many of the popular hotels. Less than 5 minutes from the Canary Wharf Novotel, Hilton and Britannia International, this is a perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee before heading into the office. They open at 7 am and offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Neama Cafe is also serious about coffee beans, and when I visited they were serving up a Guatemala varietal from Huehuetenango.Â
Address: Cuba St. 19, London E14 8LD, https://neamalondon.co.uk/eS
Canary Coffee
Located in the lobby of the Novotel London Canary Wharf, Canary Coffee is a nice place to enjoy a morning or evening coffee. There is plenty of seating, and they also serve pizza. Open until 9 pm, Canary Coffee is a perfect location to catch up on emails or, if needed, get in a few more hours of work after you leave the office.Â
Address: 40 Marsh Wall, London E14 9TP , https://www.facebook.com/canarycoffeeUK/
Black Sheep Coffee
Black Sheep is another coffee option with local roots that has grown to even expand internationally. Black Sheep serves a Robusta coffee blend, a species of bean with origins in central and western sub-Saharan Africa. (in addition to other specialty Arabica options)Â There are a couple Black Sheep locations in Canary Wharf, making it a great ‘escape the office’ option. If you’re having a really early morning or dealing with jet lag, Black Sheep’s Jubilee Place location opens at 6:15 am! Note that Black Sheep is 2 levels down at Jubilee Place.Â
Locations:Â
8 South Colonnade, London E14 4PZÂ
Jubilee Place Shopping Centre, 45 Bank St., Canary Wharf, London E14 5NY

Business Traveler's & Visitor's Guide to Canary Wharf
Meals
Canary Wharf has so many restaurant options, where to even start? Here are great options to meet the specific needs of business travelers visiting Canary Wharf.
The Early Morning Breakfast Meeting
The Ivy in the Park is the perfect spot for a breakfast meeting with colleagues or clients. They open at 7:30 am, and breakfast is served until 11:30 am. The atmosphere is a classy and chic, with lots of plants, windows and an outdoor patio for the warmer months. Their menu includes a variety of standard breakfast fare, but with extra attention to quality and details. See the menu here. The Ivy in the Park has the feel of a place you’d want to bring someone to make a good impression but not spend your entire travel budget on the first meal of the day. I recommend making a reservation. I went on a Thursday morning, and by 8:30 it was very busy.
Address: 50 Canada Square Park, Canary Wharf E14 5FW
Lunch Options Beyond the Cafeteria
I must admit, the cafeteria at my office in Canary Wharf is actually pretty good. But still, you may as well try some local options if you can! Also, if you’re vegetarian or vegan, London will have PLENTY of options for you to choose from. Especially if you’re visiting in January!Â
Â
In 2014 the 'Veganuary' challenge started, where participants pledge to veganism for the month. The 2020 Veganuary campaign saw 400,000 subscribers, and even fast food chains like McDonalds and KFC are adding vegan options to their menu! If you're looking for a plant-based option, you should have no problem finding one.
Birleys
Serving absolutely delicious sandwiches, Birleys is a hearty lunch option. Even though it’s a chain in Britain, Birleys would give your local NY deli a real run for its money. Order a pastrami sandwich, and you’ll watch the meat being carved right in front you along with fresh bread, tasty pickles and a bit of salt & pepper. They also serve soup and salad.Â
Address: Cabot Place West, Canary Wharf E14 4QT
Food Trucks at E14 EATS
Along the water on South Quay Walk, between the South Quay Foot Bridge and Admirals Way, you’ll find a small group of food trucks serving up delicious lunch options! If the weather’s nice, take a stroll across the pedestrian bridge to pick up lunch. I highly recommend Lamb Rogan Josh Curry from Curry Samba. The Curry Samba truck sells Asian / Brazilian fusion, and other trucks offer Lebanese street food, Cuban sandwiches and more. I couldn’t find some of the trucks on Google, but you look for ‘Cafe Samba Canary Wharf’ it will lead to you to the right place! (Or look for ‘Street Food Vans’ on my map at the top of the post.)Â
Wagamama
My final lunch recommendation is Wagamama, modern Asian cuisine with a Japanese influence. It is a delicious and easy option for a quick sit down meal. Whenever I’m in Canary Wharf, I always end up at Wagamama for lunch at least once. It’s generally a crowd pleaser. If you’re eating out with a local colleague who is paying out of pocket, Wagamama is very reasonably priced. The Jubilee Place location is busy at lunch time, but I’ve never had trouble getting a table for 4 or fewer without a reservation.Â
Address: Jubilee Place – Mall Level -1, Canary Wharf E14 5N
Casual Lunch for a Group in Canary Wharf - Two Tasty Pizza Options
Planning a casual lunch out with your team but don’t want burden your hosts with finding a spot? Here are a couple options that can easily accommodate groups of 10 or more! Just be sure to book in advance.Â

Zizzi
Pizza, pasta & Italian dishes with plenty of room for a crowd! Zizzi is a UK-based chain that has been around for 20 years. But the menu is in touch with modern flavors and preferences. The personal pizzas at Zizzi are pretty large. They offer 3 crust options: traditional, Rustica (a thinner, crispier crust) and the skinny. When I ate at Zizzi in January there was also a 1/2 pizza and salad option. There are plenty of fun topping combinations to choose from, including jackfruit, wagyu beef, goat cheese and even wild boar!Â
Address: 33 Westferry Circus, Canary Wharf, London E14 8RR
Â
Want to win some brownie points with your budget manager? Check out Zizzi's offers page for special deals at the Canary Wharf location!
Pizza Pilgrims
Founded after taking a ‘Pilgrimage’ to Italy seeking to learn the true art of pizza-making, Pizza Pilgrims is another great group option. Located on West India Quay, Pizza Pilgrams is on the north side of Canary Wharf. (just over the N Dock Footbridge) If the weather’s nice, definitely take advantage of the outdoor seating! If not, inside there is more seating and a foosball table, too! Definitely make a reservation, especially on a Friday afternoon or if you’ve got a meeting you can’t miss after lunch. Some of Pizza Pilgrims’ locations offer Halal options, and they are working making it standard across all their shops. This was not available yet in Canary Wharf, but give the restaurant a call in advance for up to date information.Â
Address: 12 Hertsmere Road, London, E14 4AE
If you have solid recommendations for fancier group lunch options in Canary Wharf, please let me know in the comments!Â
After Hours - Canary Wharf's Hippest Spots for a Drink with Coworkers
Organizing a Happy Hour or looking for a fun place to grab a drink after work? Here are a couple options where you can’t go wrong!
ObicĂ Mozzeralla Bar, Pizza e CucinaÂ
Dinner & drinks, plus incredible cheese! ObicĂ is classy, chic and convenient. Located inside Canary Wharf’s WinterGarden, ObicĂ is completely surrounded by clear glass windows on all sides and above. The tone of the restaurant is set by the umbrellas and standing plants, making you feel as though you’re outside on a warm Mediterranean patio even in winter. ObicĂ ’s highlights include their mozzarella and mixed drink options. La Mozzarella di Bufala Campana is ObicĂ ’s shining star, made exclusively from milk from water buffalo on select farms and dairies in Campana, Italy. The mixed drink menu is extensive, and there are also non-alcoholic options. Each drink is even given a rating by characteristics including sweet, sour, bitter or fruity.Â
Address: Unit 1 West Wintergarden, 35 Bank St, London E14 5NW
BĹŤkan 39 Rooftop Bar & Terrace
Located on the 39th floor of the Novotel London Canary Wharf, BĹŤkan’s rooftop terrace offers sweeping views of Canary Wharf and beyond. BĹŤkan is the perfect spot to enjoy a summer evening drink above the hustle and bustle below. Drinks are pricey, but the view is fantastic! The space can get crowded quickly, so head to BĹŤkan for an early drink if you want to try to get a table next to the windows.Â
Address: 40 Marsh Wall, London E14 9TPÂ

Are you looking to escape Canary Wharf for an evening? If so, try out one of London’s best gastropubs or bars in another part of the city. Invite along a co-worker. They’re sure to be impressed by your selection!
Deliveroo - Bring Dinner to You!
Long day of meetings in the office? Getting in a few extra hours of work from your hotel room? Use the Deliveroo app to have dinner delivered to you! Deliveroo is the UK’s version of Seamless or Grub Hub, and there are some delicious options that deliver to Canary Wharf. The best part is you can track your delivery in real time with the app!
Note: Be prepared for a delivery fee of at least GBP 1.
Canary Wharf's Greenspace
Take advantage of urban greenspace right outside your office! Over 20% of Canary Wharf is made of terraces, plazas and landscaped walkways and parks. According to the Canary Wharf Group, there are even over 1,000 trees and shrubs in the area! Not to mention, one of London’s highest concentration of green roofs. Invite colleagues for a mid-day stroll to get some fresh air between meetings or enjoy dinner al fresco.
Canary Wharf Group, the company behind the redevelopment of the area, is actively experimenting with ways to increase visitorship and traffic beyond just commuters. Check their website for upcoming events, art installations and musical performances happening right outside your office!Â
During the holiday season and through January, Canary Wharf hosted the annual Winter Lights festival. Attracting both locals and tourists, the whole area was light up in a rainbow of colors!
Crossrail Place
Crossrail Place is a giant multi-story structure that will eventually house a station for the UK’s Crossrail system. Don’t get too excited yet, but before the end of 2021 you may be able to get from Heathrow or Paddington in Canary Wharf on one train line! In the meantime, Crossrail Place is home to bars, cafes, restaurants and my personal favorite, the Roof Garden! The Garden is free and open to the public! On a warm, sunny day this is the perfect spot for a lunch or coffee break. (There’s a Notes location downstairs!)Â
Don’t miss the Crossrail Place Roof Garden! A mini-oasis of natural beauty contrasted against the post-industrial background of Canary Wharf’s skyscrapers.Â
The greenspace alone in Crossrail Place is note worthy, but the thought behind the design is even cooler! Crossrail Place lies just west of the Prime Meridian. The Roof Garden landscaping is divided into two sections representing the east and west hemispheres. You’ll find Japanese Maples and bamboo lining the eastern side of the garden, and ferns and palms from the Americas to the west. When selecting the plant species, special attention was even given to varieties native to countries visited by ships from the West India Dock Company. (which played a critical role in the history of modern day Canary Wharf!)Â
Mudchute Park & Farm
The award for the ultimate greenspace near Canary Wharf definitely goes to Mudchute Park & Farm! Just south of Canary Wharf’s bustling business epicenter is Mudchute, home to 32 acres of open fields, a playground and an urban farm! Who knew that just a 10 minute metro ride away are cows, pigs, chickens and even llamas!? Honestly, your colleagues probably don’t either! The farm is open 9 am to 5 pm, seven days a week, and it is free to walk around and visit your four-legged neighbors!Â
Mudchute farm is actually a small farm, so don't wear your work clothes. When I visited in January it was muddy, and I was thankful that I changed out of my work shoes.

Interested in planning a visit to the farm? Read my guide to visiting Mudchute Park & Farm here.
Mudchute Park & Farm History
Left derelict during the mid-20th century, in 1974 the park’s land was slated by the city as the future home of a high rise estate. Community organizers came together to protect the land, and in 1977 the Mudchute Association was form formed. Today there is a thriving garden with livestock (most of which are breeds native to the UK), community education programs and even stained glass making courses! There are even corporate volunteering options at Mudchute!Â
Directions: Mudchute Park and Farm is served by 3 DLR stops: Crossharbour, Mudchute and Island Garden. When coming from Canary Wharf, get off at the Crossharbour stop. Cross the street and continue through the parking lot until you reach the enter northern entrance. To get to the park area, which is south of the farm, take the DLR two stops further to Island Garden.
Sheep and cows are not the only surprises you’ll find at Mudchute. Don’t be confused if you suddenly stumble across restored anti-aircraft weaponry from WWII. During the War, Mudchute and the surrounding docklands were used as a military defensive post against German bombings. Today the site not only is a haven for local flora and fauna, but also stands as a reminder of a darker time in London’s history.Â
Staying Healthy in Canary Wharf
Getting sick sucks. You know what’s worse? Getting sick while traveling for business and being thousands of miles away from home! If you’re in Canary Wharf and the symptoms start to set in, visit Boots. Boots is a pharmacy chain (similar to a Walgreens, CVS, Duane Reade, etc.) where you find over the counter medications and other health and beauty products. There are 4 Boots locations in Canary Wharf. The Canada Square location is open latest until 9 pm.
Late-Night Needs
For later-night medicine / health & beauty needs, try Tesco Express. Much more limited than Boots, but you should still be able to pick up over-the-counter medicine for a headache or other simple needs. If you’re staying on the southern side of Canary Wharf, the the closest Tesco Express is right outside of the South Quay DLR Station, and it’s open until 11 pm. A ten minute walk further you’ll find another Tesco Express open until midnight (see map above.)
Fitness in Canary Wharf
Business travel shouldn’t mean you have to completely ditch your fitness routine! There are plenty of gym classes right in Canary Wharf. Check before your visit for the must updated class offerings, but here are a few to get you started.
Â
Bikram Yoga Canary Wharf – Hot yoga studio
Barry’s Bootcamp – High intensity workout combining weights, strength training and treadmills
PureGym– Full gym facility with weight machines, cardio equipment and group exercise classes. They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pure Gym offers short time membership options that may be perfect if you’re just working from Canary Wharf for the week. As of February 2020, prices are 1 day for GBP 12, 3 days for GBP 25 & 7 days for GBP 32.Â
ClassPlass – Are you a ClassPass subscriber? You can temporarily change your city and use your standard subscription for classes during your stay in London! There are a few different studio options in Canary Wharf, including Bikram Yoga.

Have a Little More Free Time?
I always try to pad my business travel with an extra day or two for sightseeing! Traveling alone can be intimidating, but there is plenty to do for solo travelers in London.
Best things to do near Canary Wharf:
Museum of London Docklands
I highly recommend planning a visit to a few more sights near Canary Wharf!  Trace the history of London’s docklands from the early days of maritime trade up through modern day Canary Wharf! Located in the building that was originally a warehouse of the West India Docks company, plan to spend a few hours learning about the importance of Canary Wharf’s docklands on the development of London as a center of commerce and trade. The museum is free, and the exhibitions are well laid out for a self-guided visit. The best part: It’s free!Â
https://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/museum-london-docklands
Â
A visit to the Museum of London Docklands will give you the context to appreciate the evolution over time of Canary Wharf’s history as an economic and trade hub. From the 1600s to the 1800s Britain’s global trade was expanding, and goods (and business travelers!) from all over the world passed through the docklands. Tea from India, silk from China and sugar from the West Indies. The museum does not hesitate to openly own up to Britain’s role in the global slave trade, a critical part of history that is too often omitted. You can even walk through a recreation of one of London’s Sailortowns from the mid-1800s. Another highlight of the museum are the galleries sharing the recent history of Canary’s Wharf’s transition mid 20th century decline into the development of a thriving central business district today.Â
If your partner and kids happen to be along for the trip, this is a fantastic museum for families! There is even a special exhibit room for children under 5 (You have to book a slot in advance.)
River Taxi Ride down the Thames
Ready to escape Canary Wharf for a bit? Consider taking the River Taxi! It’s about a 1/2 hour ride from Canary Wharf to central London stops, including Embankment, Waterloo or London Bridge. If you pay with your Oyster card it will even cost less than GBP 10 for a one-way trip! This is the best deal you’ll find to cruise down the Thames! The River Taxi departs from Canary Wharf about every 20 minutes on weekdays. If you’re looking for more London adventure inspiration, here are my 16 favorite places in London to make memories! Â
Greenwich Foot Tunnel
Going over the Thames isn’t the only way to make it to the south side of the river. Consider walking UNDER the Thames through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel! Head south of Canary Wharf to the bottom of the Isle of Dogs where you can walk underground to Greenwich, just across the water. First opened in 1902, the tunnel was primarily used by workers to commute between the docklands or shipyards and their homes in south London. The tunnel is about 1,200 ft long and is only a short walk under the Thames! If you’re headed to Greenwich, consider walking there! Greenwich is definitely a must-visit when in London, but there is so much to do and see that I will leave that for another post!
Looking for a quick weekend get-away after your business trip to London?
Consider heading to Belgium for a few days! Brussels is a quick 2-hour ride away on the Eurostar! I recently spent just a long weekend in Belgium, and it was perfect! Delicious chocolate, interesting museums, quality coffee and, of course, the best waffles! Check out my guide History Lover’s Guide to Mechelen, Belgium here!Â
I hope this post leaves you a little more excited for your next trip to Canary Wharf and inspired to Escape the Office! Also, I would be remiss if I did not give a big thanks to my colleagues in Canary Wharf for their recommendations that helped build this post! Help make this visitor’s guide to Canary Wharf even better and let us know in the comments!
Do you have other suggestions for how to make business travel to Canary Wharf even better?
Thanks for this super detailed guide!! My friend actually took me here last year but I would love to go back and explore more now that I know all this!!!
This post takes me right back! I used to work near Canary Wharf and walking through those modern buildings was always one of the nicer parts of living in London. 🙂
Wow there’s so much to do in this city. Love the variety. Saving this for later!
This is such a detailed guide! Personally, I enjoy the architecture of the area and views from the waterfront and a visit to the Museum of Docklands is always an interesting outing. As a London blogger myself, I wouldn’t really think of Canary Wharf as a must-visit destination so it was refreshing to see the area through your eyes and made me reconsider my perception of the area! 🙂
what a comprehensive guide! thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness…this is a foodie heaven! I don’t know where I would start, maybe Wagamama? I’d probably create a with a long bucket list that I would knock off over a series of days and meals. YUM!! I also love the roof top gardens and cute sheep and cattle on the park/farm. Who knew Canary Wharf would be my kinda place? I know now, thanks to you!
Thanks, Jackie! I had very low expectations for Canary Wharf since I thought it was only a business center at first! It’s actually a neat place in visit in London!
